The Value of The Keywords

Choosing a domain name for your business can be extremely difficult.

While most people naturally try to secure their business name, there’s value in understanding the role that keywords play in your domain name strategy. Consider adding keywords to your domain — It could help your website’s performance in a search.

What are Keyword Domains?

A keyword domain is a domain name that contains keywords about your business, products, services or ethos.

What is Click-Through Rate?

Click-through rate is a metric that measures the number of clicks made on a specific link or a call-to-action button, compared to the number of times the link is actually seen by people, which is called the number of impressions.

The click-through rate formula is as follows: CTR = (clicks / impressions) x 100

The importance of the CTR

The key to any effective marketing campaign is a thorough understanding of the customer base that you are trying to reach. The more understanding your business has of its customers, the better placed you will be to target those customers effectively, using content and branding that is tailor-made to appeal to them. If the CTR of a link or advertisement is low, this could indicate that the language used in the copy is not appealing to the customers you are trying to reach, or that the placement of it means it is not reaching the right people in the first place.

Why you should include keywords in your domain name

When creating your domain name, think about the keywords that your target audience will use when searching for your brand, product, or service. By flattening your domain name strategy with your audience’s search intent, you not only have a better chance of being found, but you increase the probability that they will actually click – through on your search result.

Strategically, adding keywords to your domain name can potentially have two main benefits:

Higher rankings

A well-chosen, keyword-rich domain can have positive implications on your ranking, as search engines treat domains as one of their many ranking factors. It is important to note choosing a keyword-rich domain alone will not improve your rankings, but rather it is just one piece of an integrated, well-executed strategy.

Increased CRT

A recent study performed showed that domains with keywords matching a search query received more clicks than those that did not. The study looked at the click-through rates of the top 20 search results for 11 million search queries. While results that had no matching keywords in the second-level domain averaged a 12.44% click-through rate, those with one matching term were clicked 21.79% of the time, and those with two or more matching keywords saw a 25.3% click-through rate.

What are Google Ads?

Google Ads, previously called Google AdWords, is Google’s advertising platform. You can use it to create advertisements, bid on specific keywords, and determine how much you are willing to pay for every click on your advertisement because Google Ads operates on an auction system, which happens in real-time.

When users search for a keyword you have selected, if your bid is higher than that of other advertisers then your advertisement will appear at the top of the search results with a small tag next to it indicating that it is a paid result.
