What’s a subdomain, and why is it a good idea to have one?
When you visit a website, you might notice that the destination on which you arrive might slightly change depending on the content of the web page you are viewing.
For instance, if you visit domainer.com, you will arrive at our home page, but if you click on the blog section, the domain will slightly change to domainer.com/blog, which will take you to our blog content. And although the domain name changes, you are still on domainer.com.
That is a classic example of a subdomain. In this blog post, we will dive deeper into what a subdomain is and the importance it plays.
What exactly is a subdomain?
A subdomain is that piece of additional information added at the beginning of your domain. It gives websites additional flexibility to organize content for specific purposes- like a forum, a blog, or a store.
For instance, if you sell trucks, your domain might be truck.com, but if you want to send visitors to your store your subdomain might be “store.trucks.com.”
In this example, “store” is the subdomain, “truck” is your main domain, and “.com” is the TLD (top-level domain). Your domain name can be anything, but it’s best if your subdomain is something that it’s easy for your clients to type and remember.
When it’s good to add subdomains?
As we said above, you might want to use subdomains to organize your website content better.
You might also consider adding a subdomain if you operate in different locations. For instance, if you have a restaurant in New York and Washington, your subdomains might look like that: ny.bestburger.com and washington.bestburger.com
If you want to point out that the content is in a different language, you can add a subdomain. For instance, wikipedia.org uses a subdomain ” “en” to point out that the content is in English (en.wikipedia.org), “es” to point out that the content is in Spanish (es.wikipedia.org), and so on. Sometimes it’s easier to create multiple pages than to have a multilingual website.
Are subdomains good for your SEO efforts?
Subdomains help you better organize your content, streamline your website hierarchy and improve user navigation. This helps your website visitors find what they are looking for more efficiently, which is important for your SEO strategies.
As you can see, subdomains might be a good choice, but what matters most at the end of the day is if you have a great domain.
It all starts with a great domain that will differentiate you from the competition. If you have a great domain, it’s easy to organize your website with subdomains and additionally improve your SEO.
